Our next meetings are:- 

May 2nd

Hélène Robinson will give a talk about Lemn Sissay, a celebrated British and Ethiopian poet with many literary awards.

June 6th Annual General Meeting of the Southend Poetry Group. Time to elect/re-elect your Committee Members, present your ideas for improvement, suggest talks for the future etc. This will be followed in the second half of the evening by a read around of your own or favourite poems.

July 4th Southend Poetry Group's Open Mike session. This differs from a 'read a round' in that members will be able to showcase a small sample of their work in front of a mike instead of just 1 at a time. A strict time limit will be given to each poet's readings as we have to vacate the premises by 10.30 pm.

August 1st Shirley Baker will give a talk on 'The Rubáyát of Omar Khayyám revisited'. If there is time in the second half, members will be invited to give their observations or readings of other Persian poets.

September 5th Liz Rowlands has chosen John Betjeman (1906-1984), English poet, essayist and originator of English light verse, as her subject for a presentation.
October 3rd Meeting to celebrate the event of the Essex Poetry Festival. Details to be notified

November 7th

1st Session : Peter Woodgate will present the poetry of Christy Brown.Publisher of 3 volumes of poetry and biographical novels. ( My Left Foot, Down All the Days etc )

2nd Session: Laurie Carter will give a talk on all things Japanese including haikus.

December 5th Seasonal poems. Read a round :Members own or favourite poems about this time of year.
