Liz Rowlands
Chocolate and Flowers

After we split,
you sent me a birthday card
and, knowing my liking for chocolate,
a Mars bar wrapped in clingfilm,
that you’d flattened
with a rolling pin
so it would fit in the envelope.

You said
you’d intended
to send some flowers too.

Now you want my friendship,
but the battered Mars bar
has left me bruised.

Had you sent those flowers,
I might have seen the funny side.
